Iran, Brittan, France, Germany agree to continue nuclear negotiations
(MENAFN) Iran and the European trio—Britain, France, and Germany—have agreed in principle to resume nuclear negotiations next week, according to Iranian state broadcaster.
Citing an informed source, the outlet reported that both sides are preparing for renewed talks, though the exact time and location have not yet been finalized.
The decision follows a meeting on Thursday between Iran’s Foreign Minister and senior diplomats from the UK, France, Germany, and the EU, during which the Europeans stressed the urgency of returning to diplomatic negotiations. They warned that failure to do so could lead to the activation of the UN “snapback” mechanism, which would reinstate international sanctions on Tehran.
Prior to this, indirect talks between Tehran and Washington—mediated by Oman—were ongoing until Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on June 13. The offensive, which lasted 12 days, disrupted a planned sixth round of negotiations in Muscat. Iran blamed the United States for supporting the Israeli assault, which claimed the lives of high-ranking military officials, nuclear scientists, and civilians. In response, the U.S. also struck three of Iran’s major nuclear facilities.
A ceasefire was reached on June 24.
While Western powers insist Iran must never develop a nuclear weapon, Tehran maintains that its program is for peaceful energy production. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that any renewed talks must be based on fairness and mutual respect.
He stated, “The U.S. withdrew from the 2015 deal. If there are to be new negotiations, the other side must come with readiness for a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial agreement.”
He also warned the Europeans against resorting to threats or invoking the snapback mechanism, arguing that they “lack any moral or legal justification” to do so.
