Rome Dims Trevi Fountain Lights in Plea for Gaza Ceasefire
(MENAFN) On Friday night, Rome switched off the lights of its iconic Trevi Fountain for one hour in a symbolic and urgent appeal for a ceasefire in Gaza. The action came in response to a city council resolution passed last month, titled: “Rome will not remain silent.”
In a striking visual message, the words “Let’s stop the war in Gaza” were projected onto the facade of the Palazzo Poli, which stands behind the fountain, reinforcing the call for an immediate halt to the violence.
A crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered at the site, waving Palestinian flags and condemning what they described as acts of genocide by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
Though the projection referenced "war," demonstrators carried signs reading: “What’s happening in Gaza is not a war, it’s genocide.”
Several protesters shouted slogans accusing Israel of committing atrocities against Palestinians that they claimed surpassed those committed by Nazi Germany against Jews during World War II.
The group also voiced sharp criticism of the United States and the European Union, accusing both of being complicit through their silence.
Chants including “Free Palestine,” “Stop the genocide,” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” echoed across the square.
The demonstration caught the attention of numerous tourists, some of whom expressed support for the protesters' message.
