Lightning Strikes Claim Over Twenty Lives in India
Authorities reported that most of the deceased were laborers working in agricultural fields when they were fatally struck. Jharkhand accounted for 12 of the deaths, while neighboring Bihar reported nine fatalities.
“During the last 48 hours, at least 12 people lost their lives and seven others sustained critical injuries due to lightning strikes across various districts of Jharkhand,” a government official stated.
A local news report indicated that the districts of Giridih and Dumka in Jharkhand experienced the most severe impacts, followed closely by West Singhbhum.
A state-run broadcaster, reported: “In Bihar, at least nine people were killed and several injured due to lightning.”
Authorities have issued strong advisories urging residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and to exercise caution in open areas, warning that the risk of lightning remains high during the ongoing monsoon period.
The India Meteorological Department has released a weather alert forecasting intense rainfall and continued lightning activity across both states through July 17.
India routinely records hundreds of lightning-related fatalities each year as the monsoon season sweeps across the country.
