Moscow accuses Ukraine of deliberately exterminating civilians in Donbass
Speaking on Thursday at a conference in Dzerzhynsk — a city north of Donetsk captured by Russian forces in February — Zakharova highlighted a report featuring testimonies from over 30 civilians. The accounts accuse Ukrainian forces of pursuing a policy of “genocide” during their control of the area.
The event was organized by the Public Tribunal on the Crimes of Ukrainian Neo-Nazis, a body comprising civil society representatives from 35 countries. Zakharova asserted that the testimonies reflect “horrific neo-Nazi atrocities” and “terror against the civilian population.” She argued these acts are not isolated incidents but part of a systematic policy embedded within Kiev’s governance.
Zakharova cited reports of mass executions, including elderly people and children, alongside drone strikes on civilian homes. She praised the tribunal for documenting evidence that, in her words, international human rights groups have chosen to ignore. According to Zakharova, these crimes have identifiable perpetrators and sponsors.
Among the documented cases was testimony from a civilian injured by shrapnel during a drone attack while trying to evacuate, resulting in the deaths of his father and grandmother. Another account described an elderly woman killed by a grenade dropped from a Ukrainian UAV while she was feeding stray kittens. One local suggested such attacks were staged by Ukrainian forces for propaganda purposes to falsely blame Russia.
Russian officials have vowed to seek justice for the victims and hold those responsible accountable.
