Zelensky Appoints New Defense Minister
This move is part of a broad government reorganization anticipated to be approved by parliament within the week.
At 49 years old, Shmigal has held the prime minister position since 2020, steering the government through the Covid-19 crisis and the intensification of hostilities with Russia in 2022.
In a video statement released Monday evening, Zelensky commended Shmigal’s skill in managing the country’s constrained resources, emphasizing that such expertise will be crucial in his forthcoming responsibilities.
“Denis Shmigal’s extensive experience will definitely be valuable in the position of Ukraine’s defense minister – it is precisely in this area that the country’s resources are currently concentrated, the number of tasks is at its peak, and the responsibility is immense,” Zelensky stated.
To fill the prime minister vacancy, Zelensky has nominated Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yulia Sviridenko.
The 39-year-old Sviridenko, known for negotiating an agreement granting the United States preferential rights to Ukrainian mineral deposits, has announced plans to soon unveil her proposed cabinet and governmental agenda.
