Form 2290 Filing

Free iOS and Android apps let truckers e-file Form 2290 and get the IRS-stamped Schedule 1 in minutes — with prorated HVUT filings due year-round.

DETROIT, MI, UNITED STATES, September 8, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Send 2290, an IRS-authorized e-file provider for IRS Form 2290, announced the availability of its free mobile apps for iOS and Android, letting truckers file the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) return and receive the IRS-stamped Schedule 1 without leaving the cab.

While the industry's main Form 2290 deadline passed on August 31, HVUT filing continues year-round: a truck first used on public highways in any later month owes a prorated return by the last day of the following month. A vehicle put into service in September, for example, must be filed by October 31; one first used in February is due March 31. Form 2290 due dates follow each truck individually — a rhythm that catches new owner-operators who buy mid-season, because the deadline is set by the truck's first month on the road, not by the calendar everyone else filed on.

The tax itself applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, starting at $100 per year and rising $22 for each additional 1,000 pounds to a maximum of $550 for vehicles over 75,000 pounds. Logging vehicles pay 75 percent of the standard rate, and trucks expected to travel 5,000 miles or less during the tax period — 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles — can be reported as suspended, owing no tax while still receiving the Schedule 1 that registration offices ask to see. For vehicles first used after July, the tax is prorated by the number of months remaining in the July-through-June tax period.

The mobile apps cover the full filing workflow — guided preparation, IRS payment options, and electronic delivery of the stamped Schedule 1 — typically within minutes of IRS acceptance. The same account works across the apps and send2290.com, so a filing started on a phone can be finished at a desk, and fleets can move between bulk VIN upload on the web and status checks from the road.

"Most truckers don't buy their trucks in July, when the tax year starts," said Sam Vlahos, Manager at Send 2290. "They buy in September or February, and a prorated filing deadline follows a month later. Now that whole filing — including the stamped Schedule 1 the DMV asks for — happens from the phone that's already in the cab."

The stamped Schedule 1 is more than a receipt: it is the proof of HVUT payment that state registration agencies require before issuing or renewing tags on a heavy vehicle, whether at a county tax office, a state DMV counter, or an apportioned-registration window. What each state accepts — and the paperwork it asks to see alongside the Schedule 1 — varies more than many drivers expect, which is why receiving the document within minutes of IRS acceptance, rather than weeks by mail, has become the practical standard for keeping a truck registered and working.

Beyond the apps, Send 2290 offers a set of free tools on its website. A truck VIN checker validates the 17-character VIN — including the federal check digit that catches most typos — and decodes make, model, year, and weight class through the NHTSA database, so a VIN error is caught before it can reach a stamped Schedule 1 and stall a registration. An HVUT tax calculator estimates the tax for a single truck or totals an entire fleet by weight category and first-use month. A deadline tracker counts down IFTA quarterly filings, Form 2290 dates, and UCR registration in one view, and a refund calculator estimates the credit available when a truck is sold, destroyed, or driven under the mileage limit. All of the tools are free and require no account.

For fleets and tax professionals, the platform supports single trucks through large operations with bulk VIN upload — a practical point, since the IRS requires electronic filing for returns reporting 25 or more taxable vehicles. The platform also includes free VIN corrections and free resubmission of rejected returns, so a mistyped character or an IRS rejection does not turn into a second bill. Filings are transmitted directly to the IRS through the Modernized e-File (MeF) system, and the electronic acknowledgment arrives with the stamped Schedule 1 attached.

Filers can verify Send 2290's authorization directly on the IRS tax year 2026 Form 2290 Modernized e-File provider list on IRS.gov. The apps are available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and work with the same account as send2290.com.
